Case Study

Cross-Border Heavy Vehicle Transport & Importation – Canada & USA

Client Industry:   Commercial Construction

Challenge:
The owner of a commercial construction company in Calgary, Alberta, Canada intended to purchase a 26-foot International DT466 box truck from a dealer in Atlanta, Georgia, USA. The truck was 2,500 miles away, and the owner couldn’t spend the time to retrieve it himself. It was also imperative that the truck was successfully delivered to Calgary within two weeks so it could be outfitted for use in a complex retail project.

Solution:

The company engaged me to handle this non-typical operational challenge. The only information I received was the location of the truck, a bank draft, the name of a customs broker, and a corporate credit card for expenses.

To solve this problem:

  • I assessed the vehicle information and found that it was outfitted with air brakes
  • I determined that a special driver’s license endorsement was required to operate the vehicle
  • I enrolled in a training course the following day and obtained the necessary air brake endorsement
  • I coordinated a flight to Atlanta and arranged ground transportation to the dealer’s location
  • I planned the return route taking into account the height of the truck in relation to bridge and overpass heights along the route
  • I inspected the truck upon arrival to ensure it was in good form and then handled the transaction
  • I rerouted in Iowa after determining that an upcoming bridge would be too low to pass under without damaging the truck
  • I navigated customs procedures and liaised with the broker for expedited import processing at the Canada/USA land border
  • I managed real-time communication between all parties involved

Results:

  • The truck was successfully delivered ten days after the request was made, four days ahead of the deadline
  • The truck was delivered free from any damage that could have been caused by human negligence (low bridge height)
  • The owner of the company was able to continue his core operations without concern, knowing the situation was being handled correctly

Client Testimonial:

“Chad, that’s amazing. You did a great job. I wouldn’t have even thought about the bridge height! I would’ve crashed it for sure, or gotten into sh*t for not having the air brake ticket.”  — K. Fotopoulos, Owner, Bossi Construction Ltd. (Calgary, AB)

Meet Chad

I solve problems.

Sometimes, I use the skills I developed as a project manager in commercial real estate. Other times, I write long-form SEO articles that hit page one on Google. I may be dealing with building permits one day and handling purchasing the next. Or setting up temporary offices. Or acting as a fill-in sound engineer for a venue.

But whether I have experience with your problem or not is irrelevant.

It’s about my intuitive ability to understand what it will take to solve it without tying you up in the process.

That’s why my clients choose to work with me.
